Gilbreth's hypothesis of there being always one and only one best method of doing a job is not strictly correct. There can be different best methods, different styles of doing the job equally well. All great batsmen do not bat in an identical manner. Nevertheless there is always scope for improving the present method and methods analysis is important not only in manual operations but also in intellectual work. Alfred Marshall, the doyen of economists; once observed a group of workers painting a building. He found that at short intervals they would stop work, rest and then resume work. He adopted the same formula in his work. While studying economics, he would at short intervals turn to Shakespeare and refresh himself. His work on economics was greatly enriched by this method.
