REVOLUTION IN DECISION-MAKING

Traditionally novel decisions are made on the strength of judgement, intuition and creativity. Executives can also be trained in the art of decision-making. Simon suggests that we are now on the verge of a major revolution in non-programmed decision-making. Hitherto it had been assumed that the computer could deal with only numerical problems for which it was programmed. The computer was said to be a robot which lacked insight and creativity. Simon argues that the computer can be as thoughtful and creative as a human being. Computers can manipulate symbols as well as numbers. New decision-making techniques will be evolved for dealing with non-programmed decisions with the aid of computers.
